Like many people, I had health insurance through my employer. I was recently laid off from Megabux Corporation, and got a few months of severance. The severance also included my health benefits.
Unless a job magically appears (or companies realize that they don't really need the "perfect candidate") I will have to get insurance via COBRA. I had to call the Impersonal Help Number (or the "Personnel Help Number") for info. They sent a packet in the mail about COBRA, and there was mention of vision and dental, but nothing about medical.
I called again, and I was told that the high-deductable plan that I got was not offered by default. I could get it, but it required some more work in the "back office" and would take an extra five days. So I cannot put this off too long.
So here is a comparison of the costs. I will list what was taken out of my paycheck when I was an employee of MegaBux, what the cost is under COBRA without the subsidy recently passed by Congress and signed by Obama, what the subsidy is, and the cost with the subsidy. Some of the differences are pretty stark. The costs are per month for one person.
